Aadhaar Card is vital piece of document which is issued to you by Government of India which proves your identity and is used for various other purposes. However, it cannot be used as proof of Indian citizenship. Even Foreigners who have lived in India for more than 6 months can apply for it. It can be used for applying driving license, opening bank account, applying for Passport (Indian citizens only), water connection, electricity connection or new SIM card for your mobile.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is the authorised agency for issuing Aadhaar card.

Applying for Aadhaar card is quite simple, there are numerous Enrolment Centres spread across the country which will facilitate your enrolment.

Fee Charged: At the time of initial enrolment, you do not need to pay any fee, its free. However, for subsequent updation of address or biometrics you will need to pay fees variating from Rs 50 to Rs 100.

Step 1. You can apply for Aadhaar card by appointment or without appointment. If by appointment then visit website You need to search your enrolment center by your state or the Pin code. There are various banks, post offices and other agencies which are assigned as enrolment centers.

Step 2. Once, you have selected an appointment center, book an appointment online and visit it on designated date and time. You need to carry your 1) Photo Identification card, 2) Address proof and 3) Age proof for this. You do not need to carry photograph of yours as photo will be taken at the center itself. You also do not need to carry photocopies of documents with you.

Step 3. At enrolment centre you will be given an application form, please fill it and attach documents as mentioned above and wait for your turn.

Step 4. Designated person will scrutinise your form for validity and check authenticity of your documents.

Step 5. Representative will take your biometrics – which include taking your photo, do scan of your eyes by camera and take fingerprints.

Step 6. Once all the formalities are done, you will be issued Receipt bearing 14 digit Acknowledgement number and date and time of generation of receipt.

Step 7. It may take a few weeks’ time for your Aadhaar card to reach at your address. You can also go to UIDAI website to check status of your Aadhaar card by using your 14 digit acknowledgement number, date and time. If it is already generated, you can take printout of same.

Aadhaar card for children

No specific ID or address proof documents are required for getting Aadhaar card for children. Any one of the parents can go with the child and present his/her own Aadhaar card and that will be sufficient. However, one has to present birth certificate at the time of enrolment. Once the child attains age of 15 years, he/she has to visit enrolment centre again for updating of photo and biometrics.

RTI for Aadhaar card

If you do not get your Aadhaar card on time or do not feel the data is correct or feel that your card has been misused etc. then you have the option to file RTI application to get the information you desire.

Like any other government department UIDAI also comes under the purview of RTI act. You can direct your application to the designated CPIO of your state to seek information. List of designated officers and addresses are available on the website. You can seek information related to your ownself or related to your family members. You cannot seek information of other people whether your friends, relatives or neighbours or rivals.
